Plants have always filled my eclectic childhood. Both grandmothers were unique in thier ways of having a green thumb. From walks in the woods to glancing in naughbors yards. There were some very interesting ''freebies''.
I've had some people online and in “real life” ask me about the herbs, trees and flowers I would suggest for starting a gypsy shaman friendly garden. Ill be sharing some from the gardens of my grandmothers. In time....I will add more posts n updates if some are still interested.
Apple: if you can at all have an apple tree somewhere on your property. Even those first few years when the apples aren’t much to speak of, the tree will keep relations at your home sweet and ward off bad vibrations. Never forget to offer some spiced apple juice or cider to your tree on the Winter Solstice in the tradition of wassailing. Gypsy grandmother swore it made better crop the next year.
Catnip: even if you don’t have cats, this herb can be amazingly helpful for women (and gay men) as a love herb to draw men to you..Not just for tea....and other healing arts. Some cultures would dry the leaves and add it to thier smoking blends for seer sight. I will never forget at age 5 going out in the back yard. At my cherrokee grandmothers house. Seeing the
whole naighborhood of cats..rolling around and chewing catnip. Thier eyes glazed over staring off in space.
Comfrey: the leaves of this plant are not only good in salads, healing but great for money spells. The flowers are a reasonable substitute for borage, which is harder to grow in cool climates. Use them in workings for courage and relief of depression. Leave a leaf of large comfrey in your wallet. Wrap it around your money. It brings in money to you. Also ..COMFREY root wards off the evil of unknown strangers and brings good luck in making travel arrangements
Southernwood- Highly aromatic, shrub, perennial member of the Artemisia family. Its scent is something like a cross between lemon and camphorcis pleasant in small doses. Use dried southernwood leaves in your closets to help protect stored clothing and linens from moths, in your cabinets to ward off ants, and around windows to head off flies.
You can also make a spray by steeping the leaves in vinegar or alcohol for a few weeks, or add a few drops of essential oil to vinegar and water.
Lavender: an all around love herb that will also sweeten your home and your laundry. The plant attracts bumble bees, who will pollinate your garden at no extra charge. In magick the use of Lavender is very wide and diverse. Ranges from love, protection, purification, chastity, longevity, peace of mind, peace in home and conjugal happiness, divination, and seeing spirit.
Lemon grass: a delicious addition to many Asian dishes, this easy-to-grow grass is great for house cleaning and is an aphrodisiac. Just as an aside, dogs love to eat it to settle their stomachs. Lemongrass is relaxing and mildly sedating, so this herb makes a nice bedtime tea for divination and is a good addition to mugwort and lavender in dream pillows
Marigold: plant these golden flowers in front of your house in tubs or window boxes to draw in money. Dry them at the end of the season and sprinkle in your wallet to keep and grow the wealth you already have. Other uses Sprinkle outside your business door for more business.. and renewing personal energy.
Mint: all mints are lucky, purifying and fantastic at breaking jinxes. They also, much like marigold, protect the money you have. Pennyroyal, which is in the mint family, can be used as a ground cover and insect repellant while also helping crossed conditions in relationships (particularly marriage).
Rosemary: will grow just about anywhere, although it likes direct sun best. Its uses are endless from beauty treatments to breaking jinxes to finding love to encouraging psychic dreams.
Sage: this hearty herb is not only delicious with poultry but will also bring wisdom and impart fortitude to women. Another form of sage..White sage Salvia apiana is sacred in many Shamanic and Native American belief systems and is used in smudging, and other, ceremonies to purify the body. Sage is used in magical workings for immortality, longevity, wisdom, protection and the granting of wishes. Burn a small bundle of wild white sage..make a wish as it burns out.
Here is something that is potent..but stinky as well.........
Using Crab Shells in ones work....
Once in a while I go to the beach. Collecting not just sea shells and the pretty
sea glass or find a rare fossil of whale bone. But these things...those crab shells..
claws..legs. Just laying around or floating by as the waves come in. In my gypsy-
shaman bag (Yes I really have one) I pull out a small brown weaved burlap bag.
Just for my sea treasures. Plucking along the way best shaped and non cracked
or chipped dead crab shells..legs..claws...and...oddly at times you can use the dried out
eyes in other forms of candle magic. Might be another form of blog if anyone is really interested. Having a full bag now of these body parts, I slip them in my
gypsy-shaman bag. Being careful not to let my current find of milky quarts. Smash
At home. I take them out of the burlap small bag. Put them out on some tin foil.
Yes..the thin sheet of aluminum. Why? What the? Your asking me. This was
how my favorite conjure worker told me how to. She was told by her grandmother
that this super charges up the juju..the magick ..power of its intent. It drys on this
out in the sun in a safe place. To dry fully. For a week..might be more depending
upon your weather. Then with a clean rock ...crush it to a powder. Yes..it can get
very smelly...stinky process. After all are in a fine powder. Pour into a small but
clean glass bottle with a good screwed lid or stopper. Label it. Put it in your sacred
cabinet to use...heres a list on what I use for.
.*Be used to dress candles,
*Rub down and cleanse a persons body.
*Use together with salt, sage, bay leaf, peppermint or ginger to invoke blessings and protection.
* Use in reversal workings (send back)(dress candles or mirrors)
Heres a little treasure to share. Straight out of my sacred book of recipes
n secret brews. This was given to me. By one of my sistars.. a conjure worker
in Lafayette, Louisiana. Her grandmother and before her. Many generations
back made this chalk. Handmade..kept in a old wood box with latched lid.
Used for sigils of power. From protection..enemy away..healings just to name
a few. What are sigils in case you dont know. Are written or painted symbols that have power to them. Here is a example. I know some of you know these.
The shells of 6 eggs
1 teaspoon boiling water
1 teaspoon flour or cornstarch
1 clean rock for crushing shells to a powder
Sheet of paper
(Can grind them in coffee grinder or food processor)
1. Wash the eggshells well, do not have any egg left in them. Let them dry for an hour. Shells must be completely dry.
2. Place a sheet of paper on a hard surface. Grind the shells on the paper with a clean rock.
3. Continue grinding the eggshells until you have a fine powder. Make sure you have enough powder to fill a large spoon, which is enough for one stick of chalk.
4. When you have enough of the fine powder to make a stick of chalk, sift or pick up little bits of eggshells that are not ground up and throw them away. Leaving in little bits of eggshells will cause your chalk to break up.
5. Put the teaspoon of flour and the teaspoon of boiling water into a cup. Stir together to make a paste.
6. Add the spoonful of eggshell powder into the paste and mix well. It may help to mash it with the back of the spoon.
7. Add a few drops of food coloring if you want colored chalk. Too many drops will make the paste too wet.
8. On a clean, dry surface roll the mixture into a stick.
9. Wrap the stick up in a strip of paper towel and set aside to dry. Drying takes about three days.
10. Peel the paper off. Your ready for your juju workings! Keep in container.
I like mine in a small wooden box. Easy for me to grab when ready to use.
Other uses for ground egg shell. Also called cascarilla............
I keep a small jar of ground fine egg shell in my ceder gypsyshaman cabinet.
Magical Uses: Eggshells- repels negative energy. Is such a potent cleansing and protecting agent that it can be used in any number of ways to guard from evil, malicious magic, and disease:
1. If someone leaves a trick on your doorstep or you find some suspicious item in your home from an enemy, dust your hands with this powder before picking it up. This keeps the evil from transferring to you, and you can dispose of it safely.
2. Add some to your bath water or sprinkle in the wash bucket for scrubbing the floor to disperse negativity.
3. Use eggshell powder to make symbols on the floor or altar during ritual or spell work.. For myself...I noticed it gives a real kick to my workings!
4. Add a bit of water and use it to paint symbols on your skin or use it dry to dust your body for all-over protection.
5. Purification baths.
Primordial healing traditions of the world vary in many ways. One core belief they all share is that everything in and around us possesses an energy or spiritual charge. Feelings of negativity aren't dismissed or coped with in these cultures; they are worked with and cleared, often through the ritualistic burning of herbs or plant resins.
If you feel stuck, stressed, overwhelmed, blocked, low energy, or laden with inner conflict in your life, this ancient method of clearing the air is definitely something to try.
The intentions that are set—when used alongside certain herbs—can make for a powerful ritual that you may wish to incorporate into your regular practices.
Below, I’m going to share three shaman ceremonial herbs that are perfect to use for space clearing and how best to use them all together.
1. Use sage to clear
Sage is a wonderful healing and medicinal herb, that can be used for purification to cleanse your aura, home, automobile, or any other space you spend time in. I like to also use sage, known by the scientific name Salvia officinalis, when I travel and at home.. To clear out previous low energies etc.
I burn it after having guests over, to send their energy, any connective cords, or any soul parts along with them. For anyone working in healing arts, sage is especially important to use for cleansing after each session, to purify the energy of your space between clients.
To cleanse the space, open a window or a door, then slowly walk through each room with a piece of burning sage, allowing the smoke to remove any stagnant energy through the open portal. Try setting the intention of clearing, releasing, and letting go of anything that no longer serves you, or that doesn’t belong.
"I release attachment to anything that does not serve my highest and best self."
“I let go of any negative thoughts, worries, or any energy that does not belong here.”
2. Use palo santo to call in your desires
Palo santo’s ancestral “holy wood” medicine brings with it a sweet citrus scent and a hint of pine. The native South American tree, known as Bursera graveolens, is believed to bring good fortune and enhances creativity in those who use its medicine. Now that you’ve cleared old, negative, stuck energy from your space with sage, what specific good fortune would you like to call in? As you walk through your space with your stick of burning palo santo, be present to what you want to create more of.
Perhaps when you’re walking through your living room, you may want to call in joy, connection, healing, celebration into this space.
In your kitchen, you may want to call in health, wellness, and vitality.
In your office, call in productivity, contribution, inspiration, focus. And don’t forget wealth!
In a child’s room, you might be inspired to call in safety, protection, and growth.
In your bedroom, you might choose to call in passion, love, sensuality, and rejuvenation.
3. Use copal as an offering
Copal, or Protium copal, is a saplike plant resin often used in Maya medicine. When you light it, let it burn like an incense. In addition to its clearing properties, consider also using copal as an offering, giving thanks and expressing gratitude for your sacred space and the abundance you’ve already been blessed with.
Traditionally, copal has been used as an offering to Tlaloc (Aztec god of rain, water, lightning, and agriculture) and to Chalchiuhtlicu, (Aztec goddess of running water and springs, rivers and lakes). However, you can use copal as an offering to whichever Higher Spirit you connect with, or use it to express gratitude for all the things and people you’re thankful for.
“I offer up my gratitude for this space. May it serve as a sanctuary for all who enter.”
If you're new to the practice of clearing space using sacred smoke, sometimes it's best to simply start with one herb and get to know its action well. Let it work through you, paying attention to how it behaves when burned.
Clear intention and presence are everything here
Thrift store finds. Those wonderful treasure finding places..Interesting things.. Today
went in to one thats just up the street. Was a old doughnut shop when I was a kid.
Went to the back right of the store. Looking in the mens section for short sleeve dress shirts. I wear to clean house n cook in. Just comfy n roomy. Some were stained.. and had holes in them.. Stop in mid rack. Found a one that called me. Neon blue with Shiva on the back. Talk about blind the birds when I go outside with this on! Smelled of cheap cigars but knew how to remove that. Looked around a bit more. Found a pink one with small lotus's scattered across..and one red n black shaman like womans robe. Scent of old rose perfume. Went to scan the linen n rugs. Found what I called gypsy rug. Made from scrap fabric in bright colors n some vintage fabric.. Prize.. A good size of 4 ft. Last..zoomed the cookbooks. Some of you know me..know..I love to scan and look for cookbooks. Just I was scanning...ran across some vintage asian rice bowls. Many different patterns with bright colors. There were lotus shaped ones that I remember my grandmother having.. Wonderful custard and rice pudding. would be served in them.
Bringing them home...............
Now. Doing some juju. (Majick)
Wash and remove the past wearers vibration from clothing. Odd scents. Strange
feelings you pick up from the item. Clothing....Add 1/4 cup of ammonia with your detergent in the wash load. Your clothing wont be damaged from the ammonia.
A great amount of removal of funky and negative vibrations will be removed. I like
to hang dry mine but there is no prob putting them in the dryer.
For furniture items. n kitchen items. Large dish pan or bucket. Full of warm water.
Add 1/2 cup of epsom salts..Make sure they dissolve.. Use a clean rag or cloth. Wipe down. Over items. Really helpful to soak dishes in this clears n cleanses the items. So its ready for your own vibration print to it.Brings in blessings n luck. I Wring out cloth from fresh bucket of epsom salt water. Go over tables..chairs..side tables..everything.. Lifts up and raises better higher vibration and flow of juju to move with in your place.
My grandmother was unusual. Not the everyday kind in the naighborhood. You wouldnt catch her in a frumpy old house dress .Hanging out by the front porch. Mingling with the snotty church ladies. Who..many of times tried and I mean..tried to convert her over. Like..she would. Couple times a week. For 5 plus years they would call her name outside. Not daring to get to close to the front porch. Something was there. Made them ill they said. I was burrowing holes and making fairy houses under the front porch one day. When one of them walked up to me .Stood there staring at me. This one was so ugly..inside and out. She in my childs mind looked cross between a bat and a horse. In her time she was said to be a beauty.Perhaps in cave man days. Knew what she was going to say. Maintained my lapis silver eyes to her mud brown ones. Tip of her cane pointed to the front door. "Whats that? Is that the dried up pagan babies?" Before I could say a word. Grandma was out..in her rolled up faded levis and red lumber jack shirt. Shooting death rays at this woman. "Irene..go scoot your scabby old butt off my land. Leave my grand baby alone!" Flashed some hand gestures at Irene face. It was bad. Even I knew what it ment .000oooo man. In the house to wash my hands for lunch. I told grandma what the church lady said. Loud thud on the vintage wood table. Coffee cup was spilled over..all over the table. Grandmas face..all wet from laughing so hard. She got up and cleaned the table. Handed me a small cup of coffee with cream. Sat next to me. Looked at my face. Then held my hands together. She told me what was on the door. Mango leaves and marigold stand hanging on the door is very special. Her mother and her mother and beyond had that tradition going. It came from our gypsy east indian roots. Mango leaves brings good luck, happiness and success to your home and family. Petals of the marigold contain seeds that sprout when dropped on the ground. It symbolizes prosperity. Strings of happy leaves and fertile flowers on the threshold visually communicate the aspiration of the household in festival time. Thankfully Iv kept that tradition alive. With many others as well. Many peaple scratch their heads and ponder. But to me its part of one I am.
Only 2 peaple have looked inside grandmas sacred..yet strange journals. Many she had. Each were a different color with strange charms & symbols on the cover. If you are wondering it was just I along with grandma. Looked and flipped through the many tattered and some what torn pages. Heck man..even my fur kids took a look. So get your notebooks out! Time to scribble down some cool ,yet taboo stuff. Ill be adding more of this stuff in time..
Stuck to page thin stick of cinnamon.Used as a bookmark.
(Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Cinnamomum cassia)
Body part: heart
Tarot: The Sun
Cinnamon is the bark from a lauraceous tree. While the tree is said to be of the moon, the spice is of the sun and has long been hailed as a preserver of life.Cinnamon was not only used as a medicine and ritual incense but it may have been used for mummification, to make the body smell sweet.Practitioners of natural medicine describe cinnamon as boosting immunity and
tripling "insulin's ability to metabolize blood sugar." Taoist practitioners used it to purify the body. It is also used as an astringent and antiseptic which is why many mouthwashes are cinnamon flavoured.
Magickally, cinnamon is used in love spells, for promoting psychic awareness, and in money spells. Mixed with myrrh, it is used as incense for rituals involving the summoning of spirits. I just love to burn a cinnamon stick. Letting the smoking lightly drift around the house.
Love Drawing Pouch
This pouch is used to draw love towards you. While this spell could easily be adapted to draw a specific person to you, it is written so as to draw an unnamed person possessing the traits you desire.
Cinnamon sticks, broken into bits (you will need approx. a spoonful)
Red votive candle
Dish to burn candle on
Pin or bent paperclip for writing on candle
When to perform: To draw the love of a man, perform on a sunny day when the sun is still rising in the sky (before noon). To draw the love of a woman, perform at night during the waxing moon.
First, set up your working space. You can use flowers associated with love, anything heart-shaped, copper trinkets, etc. For small spells such as this, I use thin red tape (red is the color of love as well as energy) and tape the shape of the five-pointed star upon the white counter-top. In the center of the star, the belly, is where I put my candle and whatever else is directly involved in the spell.
When your space is set up, take the red votive and, using a pin or bent paperclip, begin writing on the candle what you are seeking. Be as precise as possible and list attributes of your potential mate (honesty, good sense of humor, etc.).By doing this you are focusing on what you intend to draw towards you and instilling this into the candle.
Set the candle down in the center of your workspace and on top of the copper (metal of Venus) penny. Use a dish to burn the candle on, if necessary.
Light the candle while, at the same time, feeling a burst of love and need in your chest and gut. While the candle is burning, it is sending out your intentions. During this time, break off about a spoonful of cinnamon. Use a small handsaw if necessary, but be very careful. If you are unable to get a hold of a cinnamon stick, you can use ground cinnamon and sew a spoonful of it into a small pouch. This is messy and not recommended but sometimes you need to make do with what you have at hand.
Place the cinnamon bits into the small red pouch.
As the candle burns and melt, take some of the run-off wax and form it into a small heart. Place this inside the pouch. When the candle has finished burning, remove the penny from under the candle and place it inside the pouch.
Clean up your workspace.
Either place your love drawing pouch inside your undies drawer (no socks allowed unless you want your love to stink) or wear it/keep it on your person.
Cinnamon Money Spell
For a quick cash fix, you'll need:
Tape-green (money), red (energy), or masking tape with crayon
green votive candle
This is what worked for me when I needed the money to get my fur kids new bag of cat food.It was a super low time.
I couldn't wait around for a scheduled check to arrive. First, tape down a five-pointed star on a clean, flat working surface. If you
don't have red or green tape you can use white for all-purpose or color masking tape with a crayon.
On the green votive candle, write the amount of money that you need and what you need it for. Use a pin or bent paperclip.
Set the candle in the center, belly, of the five-pointed star.
Next, place a small pinch of cinnamon on each of the five corners of the star.Light the candle while visualizing yourself with the item you need the money for. If you need the money for a bill, visualize yourself holding a piece of paper saying "Bill Paid."
Allow the candle to burn down completely.
Many friends my gypsy grandma had. Some were what others would call 'normal'. Others were not. You know what kind I like alot. Smiling into my morning coffee..yeah the 'Misfits'..the 'Freaks'.They were not what society called normal..then again why the f-n hell is that really...and why be a cookie cutter cut out like others. How boring. Not to say very 'clickish' like in the school system.
At one time. Going through her wood box's full.Of different kinds of yarn.Lots of thickness and colors. Scented of ceder and wild violets. My nose inhaling it..cloudy visions in view. A knock was at the kitchen door.Echoing in the warm golden light yellow. In the kitchen. Creeky door opens.
Tall and burly looking man.Strong features of elf. Walks in.Steaming green and gold tea pot.Sets on the maple table.Puffs of stream curls..and swirls up.Making patterns. Large smiles and hugs greets my grandmothers friend. Talex is his name.Warm peppermint cookies slide onto a plate. From grandma. She handed the plate to him.His favorite. We all sat around the old table. Sipping a sacred brew of tea. Recipe given to my grandma from Talex. Reaching in his tattered green jacket,to a hidden pocket. Retrieves some stones..one was larger than a chickens egg. Beautiful reddish orange color.
Across the table he gives them to me. My hands holding them like rare treasure. Feeling them hum in my hands.Warm sensation races across my hands. The look on being startled got them both laughing. To which I didnt understand why. Suddenly visions of peaple..dancing..some peaple smoking tabacco around a fire..mothers bathing thier babies at the side of the river. Then Im being pulled back to the now.Time I was in.
My eyes blinked couple times.Till I saw them both..grandma and Talex staring at me. Telling them what happend. Then there was a silence. Finally words filled the room. 'Zahra..the stone your holding is a accient shaman stone. Its from a Cherokee shaman. Its been in your Wolf Clan for centuries'
I still have that big chicken egg sized garnet. Sets in the sun near my wooden book shelf.
Here is secret oldie. Been used by many mystics and other ones of a different pattern. Than what society approves of..lol.Its called Reading the Oil with Mirror. It sounds a bit odd I know.But..its worked for many and I mean many women before us.Who wanted a quick answer.
Many of my grandmothers friends did this. As well as her.She did hers at night .Believing that the night energies carried in more powerful time to read. With her tea lights around the mirror.Making them glow and shine.
This is how its done.Get a small mirror..plastic or wood framed.Wood framed one you might get some oil on it. I got mine at the 99 cent store.Along with some tea lights.Away from a window. On a flat surface like a table..lightly drizzle onto the mirror some oil.I use olive oil...it was what grandmother used.Said it was holy and has great power in it. Get your tea lights..make around the mirror. For me I like to use 13..or what ever I have at hand.
The oil should be smeared. Reached it out to all corners. Whip fingers clean on cloth. Light tea lights.Put your question out loud.Or in your mind. Some women use to get a piece of blank paper. Bout 4 inches wide. Scribble your name on top..then under it question or intention.Fold it in 3rds towards you. Slip it under the mirror. Look into the mirror as you express what your wanting or question.Threw the oil...you will see a reflection..of a yes or no..sometimes faces of your ancestors.Now..if you see this..they are bringing it forward.
Made this myself. One day.. after finding a very organic and colorful mural.Called 'Moth smear'.The pretty colors of brown, cream white and tint of yellow...of its innards.Near the coffee pot.Dear gift of one of my fur kids. Nothing says I love you..like that greeting. Instantly remembered this recipe.Grandmother brought it with her. From her travels.Coming in to the USA.
