Plants have always filled my eclectic childhood. Both grandmothers were unique in thier ways of having a green thumb. From walks in the woods to glancing in naughbors yards. There were some very interesting ''freebies''.
I've had some people online and in “real life” ask me about the herbs, trees and flowers I would suggest for starting a gypsy shaman friendly garden. Ill be sharing some from the gardens of my grandmothers. In time....I will add more posts n updates if some are still interested.
Apple: if you can at all have an apple tree somewhere on your property. Even those first few years when the apples aren’t much to speak of, the tree will keep relations at your home sweet and ward off bad vibrations. Never forget to offer some spiced apple juice or cider to your tree on the Winter Solstice in the tradition of wassailing. Gypsy grandmother swore it made better crop the next year.
Catnip: even if you don’t have cats, this herb can be amazingly helpful for women (and gay men) as a love herb to draw men to you..Not just for tea....and other healing arts. Some cultures would dry the leaves and add it to thier smoking blends for seer sight. I will never forget at age 5 going out in the back yard. At my cherrokee grandmothers house. Seeing the
whole naighborhood of cats..rolling around and chewing catnip. Thier eyes glazed over staring off in space.
Comfrey: the leaves of this plant are not only good in salads, healing but great for money spells. The flowers are a reasonable substitute for borage, which is harder to grow in cool climates. Use them in workings for courage and relief of depression. Leave a leaf of large comfrey in your wallet. Wrap it around your money. It brings in money to you. Also ..COMFREY root wards off the evil of unknown strangers and brings good luck in making travel arrangements
Southernwood- Highly aromatic, shrub, perennial member of the Artemisia family. Its scent is something like a cross between lemon and camphorcis pleasant in small doses. Use dried southernwood leaves in your closets to help protect stored clothing and linens from moths, in your cabinets to ward off ants, and around windows to head off flies.
You can also make a spray by steeping the leaves in vinegar or alcohol for a few weeks, or add a few drops of essential oil to vinegar and water.
Lavender: an all around love herb that will also sweeten your home and your laundry. The plant attracts bumble bees, who will pollinate your garden at no extra charge. In magick the use of Lavender is very wide and diverse. Ranges from love, protection, purification, chastity, longevity, peace of mind, peace in home and conjugal happiness, divination, and seeing spirit.
Lemon grass: a delicious addition to many Asian dishes, this easy-to-grow grass is great for house cleaning and is an aphrodisiac. Just as an aside, dogs love to eat it to settle their stomachs. Lemongrass is relaxing and mildly sedating, so this herb makes a nice bedtime tea for divination and is a good addition to mugwort and lavender in dream pillows
Marigold: plant these golden flowers in front of your house in tubs or window boxes to draw in money. Dry them at the end of the season and sprinkle in your wallet to keep and grow the wealth you already have. Other uses Sprinkle outside your business door for more business.. and renewing personal energy.
Mint: all mints are lucky, purifying and fantastic at breaking jinxes. They also, much like marigold, protect the money you have. Pennyroyal, which is in the mint family, can be used as a ground cover and insect repellant while also helping crossed conditions in relationships (particularly marriage).
Rosemary: will grow just about anywhere, although it likes direct sun best. Its uses are endless from beauty treatments to breaking jinxes to finding love to encouraging psychic dreams.
Sage: this hearty herb is not only delicious with poultry but will also bring wisdom and impart fortitude to women. Another form of sage..White sage Salvia apiana is sacred in many Shamanic and Native American belief systems and is used in smudging, and other, ceremonies to purify the body. Sage is used in magical workings for immortality, longevity, wisdom, protection and the granting of wishes. Burn a small bundle of wild white sage..make a wish as it burns out.
